DEFINITION & DESCRIPTION

"Merchandising refers to the methods, practices and operations conducted to promote and sustain certain categories of commercial activity.

The term is understood to have different specific meanings depending on the context. Merchandising, as commonly used in marketing also means the promotion of merchandise sales, as by coordinating production, marketing and developing advertising, display, and sales strategies to increase retail sales.

This includes disciplines in pricing and discounting, physical presentation of products and displays, and the decisions about which products should be presented to which customers at what time. This type of merchandising is known as promotional merchandising."*

"Visual merchandising is creating visual displays and arranging merchandise assortments within a store to improve the layout and presentation and to increase traffic and sales.  As an example, mannequins are commonly used as a way to promote products relating to appearance, such as clothing or accessories.

The activity of paying attention to each brand in every product category is known as micromerchandising.

Another way of improving profitability is to carry complementary range of products and services. This triggers impulse purchase and the buyer spends more at the store.  This is known as Cross merchandising."^

The brand-new, dynamic digital merchandizing technology of in store videos, offered by vendors like Avery Media Canada, is a virtual goldmine waiting to be capitalized.
